Carrying the sauna bucket: Matti Rintamäki, Finnish Seamen’s Mission
Who are the people carrying the marathon’s sauna bucket? What inspired them to become part of the Saunawassermarathon? And at which event can you meet them?
Here you can get to know some of the marathon participants. Today, it’s Matti Rintamäki, social worker at the Finnish Seamen’s Mission in Hamburg. He answered our questions in English.
Who are you and what is your connection to Finnish sauna?
I’m Matti Rintamäki, social worker (sosiaalikuraattori) at Finnish Seamen’s Mission in Hamburg. I am a fanatic sauna person and love to go sauna every time when it is possible. I am also big fan of different kind of saunas, and I have had löyly in many different saunas, like, cavesauna, trucksauna, tent saunas, karaokesauna, etc etc. Altogether, I have visited over 200 different saunas since 2006 when I started to count.
How are you taking part in Saunawassermarathon?
We have midsummer party at the Finnish Seamen’s Mission. Sadly, I cannot participate myself, but there will be traditional Finnish Juhannusparty with grill and troubadour and some Finnish juhannusprogram. And of course: public saunas for men and women!

Where is the best sauna of your life?
The best sauna I think for every Finnish person is always the own summer cabin sauna. So it is for me also. If you ask which sauna I will always remember, it would probably be a sauna which was built in a 200l hotwater boiler. One adult could barely fit in!
